Week of the Young Child Highlights Needs of Young
Children in Richmond County
Children's Opportunities--Our Responsibilities
Please join other early childhood
professionals, educators and advocates statewide in honoring The
Week of the Young Child, April 3-9, 2005, an
annual celebration sponsored by the National
Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Today we know
more than ever before about the importance of children’s earliest years
in shaping their learning and development. Yet, never before have the
needs of young children and their families been more pressing. The purpose
of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public awareness on these needs
of young children and their families and to recognize that children’s
opportunities are our responsibilities.
The Week of the Young Child highlights the
importance of families, early childhood professionals, and communities
working together to support every child's healthy development and early
learning. Quality early childhood education is one of the best investments
Richmond County can make for our children's future. Research shows
that children attending high quality programs are more likely to develop
the language, pre-mathematics and social skills they need to succeed in
school.
Child Care Avenues and Richmond
Community College are sponsoring Children’s
Fun
Day 2005 on Saturday,
April 9th at Richmond Community College from 10:00 a.m. until
1:00 p.m. in celebration of the Week of
the Young Child. Everyone is invited to attend this event. Children will
have the opportunity to participate in making crafts, playing educational
games, and much more, while parents
receive free information on child development and how to find high quality
childcare.
Throughout the work week, April
4-8, board members and employees of Richmond
County Partnership for Children will visit local child care facilities to read
stories and give treats to the children.
These local celebrations of the Week of the
Young Child are designed to build broader support for early childhood
programs that nurture young children's early learning and growth as well
as raise the public’s awareness of the distressing statistics regarding
child abuse and neglect. Children's opportunities are our
responsibilities. If we value our children, our families, our
schools, and our community, we must make accessible, affordable,
high-quality early childhood education a priority and continue to educate
the community on the importance of raising children in a safe, nurturing
environment.
If you have any questions regarding any of
these events please call 997-2273.
