News and Features

Child Care Licensing Fee-- Anyone operating a child care facility will incur a licensing fee.  The amount of the fee is based on a center's licensed capacity.  The new licensing fee does not apply to child care homes or to religious-sponsored child care centers operating with a Notice of Compliance.  Licensing fees will not be charged to centers located in public schools or to centers operated by the State.
Did you know that anyone caring for an infant (12 months or younger) in a center or home must place the baby on its back to sleep unless there is a waiver for another sleep position?  This is a licensing requirement monitored by your child care consultant.  Center and home providers licensed to care for infants will be required to take training on safe sleep practices.  It is anticipated that directors of centers licensed for infants and any person in that center who is scheduled to work in the infant room must be trained.  Any family home provider caring for infants will need to take the training.  New employees shall complete the ITS-SIDS training within four months of assuming responsibilities in the infant room or as the administrator.  The training has to be taken every three years.
Child care providers, whether licensed or not will face criminal charges if they intentionally give children in their care medication without a parent's authorization.  It is illegal to willfully operate an illegal child care program and any persons doing so may face felony charges.
Did you know that your NC star-rated license is reassessed every three years? Those facilities which received two through five stars in 2003 will be reassessed sometime this year (2006). You will receive a packet in the mail six months beforehand, and your reassessment will include a full compliance visit and, if applicable, environment rating scale assessments. To prepare for reassessment, inform your staff of what will happen, review child care rules, and conduct practice assessments with the environment rating scales. If you would like Child Care Avenues to help you prepare, contact us--we would be glad to assist you!
